This is another question that comes up regularly at the forum and is also one that we get the occasional DM about: "Can I use my card on someone else's betting or casino account?"

There is a nice straight simple answer to this question: No you can't use your card on someone else's betting or casino account.

Why can't I use my card on someone else's betting or casino account?

The main reason why is that is will typically break the terms laid out by the betting or casino operator you have signed up with. Almost every single on of these operators will have clear terms that state you cannot use your card on someone else's account and visa versa. It is actually a requirement of all regulated betting and casino operators, as they are required to do KYC checks on their customers.

Here is an example from Betfair's website:

Examples of when this happens

A very common example of where this crops up is when a husband and wife, living in the same household decide that they want to use their partners card to make the next deposit. What seems fairly reasonable and trivial to them is completely at odds with the terms of the betting site or online casino they are making that deposit at.

There are also other examples, which are not as simple as this. Quite often people that have developed a problem with their gambling can be very persuasive and can convince friends or loved ones to just let them use their card to make a desposit. Commonly occurring when they have run out of money and are chasing losses.

Repercussions

It's bad in all honesty, as you may find that you are allowed to get away with depositing with your card in someone else's account and you may find that lots of money can be spent before it is detected. However, the moment you win, will be the moment that the betting site or online casino turns round to you to say that you've broken the terms and conditions of your account.

Here are some threads to prove this happens:

The sad thing is, there has not been many positive outcomes from any of these situations, and this is something that is occurring multiple times daily.

Protections

Unless you have be defrauded in some way, as in someone has hacked your account and used someone else's details to deposit (extremely unlikely), then there is very little to protect you use your card on someone else's betting or casino account. The main reason being is that the betting sites and online casinos are obligated in regulated gambling markets to do KYC and verification checks on all their players. So, when someone else deposits in your account, they are not vetted or verified in anyway, regardless of whether they are your wife, brother, cousin etc. In unregulated markets they will just use this against you anyway, as a reason not to pay out on any of your winnings.

So, the bottom line, do not use your card on someone else's betting or casino account and do not try to get someone else to deposit in your betting or casino account, as you are all highly likely to lose whatever you have deposited.

Please feel free to share any of your own experiences in this thread, as it is important that everyone understands how much of a problem this can cause. Here are some other discussions on the subject -

Just a little story about a situation mum and dad got into a while ago that has some elements of these issues, that might be worth telling as it was completely accidental.

Mum deposited accidentally using dad's card details on (I forget which site it was), due to the browser storing both their card details for auto filling in. She didn't realise she had chosen the wrong card and deposited on her account isn't dad's card details.

Luckily she realised fairly quickly as dad got a banking popup on his phone , so she luckily hadn't started playing.

I told her that was the best thing to do was stop and not do anything, and contact them about the mistake.

It took some back and forth, a written letter signed by dad saying she could use his card and then she was free to carry on, with a warning to make sure only to deposit with your own card in future So a positive outcome here , although as I say has some elements to the issues above. :)

Hey @spoo42 it's a great example of how easy it is to accidentally do that. You click the pop ups too quickly, or you don't fully realise the stored card is your partners.

Thankfully this is a positive outcome of the situation, but sadly most aren't.

Can't say it strongly enough - be very careful when depositing and withdrawing from a betting site or online casino and make sure it is your card only.

Yeah it was a good outcome, and i went into their laptop after and turned off all auto fill banking stuff, as they were paranoid after that they were using the wrong details! The only time thats ever happened to anyone I know, but luckily it went ok. :)

I used my brother's MrQ account, which he only registered for the sign up bonus. After I hit a max win on Chilli Heat Megaways they closed the account because the name on the card didn't match the account and refunded me all of my deposits.

Max win was 4000x with a minimum bet for a total of £1000, they refunded me £1300 in deposits.

Yep, they behaved exactly like a proper UKGC site should. Fair play to them.
