A Pet Peeve of mine/ Reality Shows

While I do not think all of these should be classified as reality: Some are competition shows. Some are in syndication.(Repeats)


The following are all classified as reality shows based on the discriptions I found on Xfinity/Comcast programming guide.

Allmost all of these programs were running the week+ of 05/09/2012 thru 05/18/2012. The letters following each program represent the station/network they are currently being aired.

Also, I might add, in doing this, I realize this may qualify me for show #83.........LOL!

Out of all of those i think the few that i like would be American Pickers & Deadliest Catch , 95% of that is pure rubbish in my opinion.

Yes, I believe some are very educational. Like "Americas' Most Wanted" is very informational about crooks here in the USA.

This is just the information I found and classifications according to my cable company.

I am sure there are plenty more too, unfortunately............ each season, a new batch of crap!

You would think the "real" actors and actresses would boycott or at least try to fight this kind of programming. It is taking away from their careers in my opinion.

lol, I blame MTV - they started this whole 'reality show' crapola - Real Life I think it was.

Reality shows are great for TV producers, there are millions of people who want their 15 minutes (or more) of fame and they don't have to pay them the way they have to pay real actors. It's interesting how far it's gone though - obviously there are people watching. Ray watches American Pickers and Pawn Stars and sometimes Storage Wars - not for the people but for the 'stuff' - and I watch Canada's Worst Handyman and Canada's Worst Driver, so I'm not immune to it either. I don't like the ones that are just about people or relationships or whatever, but if they're doing something interesting I might watch a bit. I even watch Hoarders every once in awhile when I feel like my house isn't clean enough.

Well I've always said "It's not reality if they know they're on tv." A real reality show would have hidden cameras and the people wouldn't know they were on tv until it was all over.

Speaking of hidden cameras, I watched a Marketplace awhile back - they called a bunch of plumbers in to fix a dishwasher that wasn't really broken and they left the guys alone in the kitchen to see if they'd fix the problem or create a bigger problem. They also had a misaligned sensor on the garage door so called some garage door repairmen. Of course they had hidden cameras on them, and maybe half of the repairmen tried to sell the 'homeowner' something they didn't even need. The really messed up thing is that two of the guys fixing the garage went into a corner of the garage to take a pee, and one of the dishwasher guys looked around really sneakily and reached up and grabbed a coffee cup off the counter and had a pee too!

So....let that be a lesson to you - only hire women to fix your dishwasher, it's not that easy for them to pee in your coffee cups.

I'll admit to an extent we're Reality TV junkies in our home ie the shows we watch are considered reality TV. We wait til a season is over and download at watch at our leisure.Some I admire for the talent, some for what I learn about a particular field, some for pure brain candy:

Yea its really sad. I noticed this trend since MTV decided they wanted to stop playing music videos and start showcasing bs shows like teen mom.
I only have a few shows that I bother to watch because hollywood certainly isn't hiring writers anymore. Now all we get are these cheesy reality shows that are faker than a 12 dollar bill.

The sad thing is people actually bring up reality tv stuff in conversation.
I was in the break room, and I overheard some lady talking about this girl. I really thought it was her daughter or something the way she was talking about her. I mean it was like she actually knew this girl. And when I listened further I noticed that she was talking about some chick on some reality show.
But it was so weird how she acted like that was someone she knew.
Crazy how people can gain attachments to superficial things.

All my man ever does is sit and watch reality tv shows, apart from Big 'Boring' Brother, I hate them too apart from maybe 2 of em, as for all this crappy tv, I think these shows come about to 'take up most air time' because all other shows are repeats

The repeats is the very reason why I stopped paying for sky tv, I already pay a licence for tv (just for 4 channels BBC 1234) TV which I don't even watch, and I certainly don't watch BBC.

I only get 1 tv station...CBS...I CHOOSE NOT to watch tv for obvious reasons.
I do enjoy some tv series, but I have bought the DVDs to watch at my leisure, without the commercials. It drives me crazy when I go to my daughters' house, there are 6 tvs on with 6 different programs on, plus the kids on the computers playing games and stuff. The noise is unbelievable sometimes. My son is the same way, a tv in every room with something different on each tv. How in the world do you know what is happening on each program that way???

I also read a lot and spend a lot of time on my computer reading, so watching tv really doesn't do anything for me. And don't you have to watch these things every week to keep up? I can't remember to turn the tv on even when I put a post-it-note on my monitor to remind myself there's a program I may be interested in.

Must confess I like watching Big Brother, starting next month, maybe July I think.

Haven't you all worked it out yet? It's the CRYING SHOT these programmes are all about, the equivalent of the money shot in porn movies.

An example being Cowboy Builders here in the UK.
Basically the show starts with a sad, gullible homeowner who has just handed £30k in convertible currency over to a bloke with a high-visibility jacket and an Irish accent, who for this 30k has offered to build a 50k extension to their home. A week later, after he's sent an illiterate round to knock a hole in a wall and a ton of breeze blocks has been deposited in the front garden, there is a polythene sheet over the hole and Paddy has spunked the 30k at the bookies or drank it or both. Amazingly his pay-as-you-go phone number is disconnected so in despair the family has contacted Channel5.

A month later, a short blonde bird called Melissa bounds up the path to the door, vast bosoms bouncing in unison, to offer hugs to the depressed homeowner. Her accompanying builder scratches his head, says 'phwoarrrr, dunno about that' a lot and 'no way can we do that in budget'. Melissa puts a lower cut top on and proceeds to cadge free tiles, bathroom fitments and kitchen items from local suppliers only too glad to get the customary big hug after their donation and thus for a brief second have those wondrous appendages pressed into their stomach area.

The gullible homeowners are moved out for 2 weeks, while the team, bossed by Melinda, finish the job and transform the home into a modern contemporary dwelling, the envy of their neighbours.

Now the preparation for the big homecoming starts - cameras set up to catch the mass ejaculation of tears as Mr. and Mrs. Peawit gasp in astonishment at their transformed home, Melissa standing next to them ready for the group hug, having peeled an onion in advance to moisten her eyes in empathy.
You can sense the producer going 'aaaaahhhhhhhh that's better' as the camera zooms in on the lachrymose couple. "One hour's TV and 50 grand but we've got our tears, that's what the viewer wants!"

Cross this ethos over to almost every show you got on your list here, plus the damnable 'talent' shows like the pox-factor, voice etc. and you know waht Sun-reader TV is all about.......

I know what you mean! AND, there are too many like that! They are taking over. Back when it began, I didn't mind, I didn't watch them, but they were not on every frickin station! Now, thats all there is! And its not enough to have 1 or 2 shows in a row, they have to have a marathon of them, so, that is all that is on ALL DAY LONG!!!

One of my favourite reality shows is not listed: Antiques Roadshow. Ka-ching!

I do watch Top Chef from time to time. The first time I saw Storage Wars was during a marathon, I confess I had a hard time tearing myself away, but my interest has waned.

Hoarders I watch both to make me feel better about the state of my house, and to part with things that hold emotional attachment for me. Or are to good to throw away, and not worth enough to sell.

14. Around The World in 80 Plates ........Bravo sounds like something I would like, I'm going to have a look to see if it's showing up here.

And I LOVE Come Dine with Me, both the original and Come Dine with Me Canada.

You know what's the worst thing, is when they create a stupid reality show like the real housewives and then replicate it in another place. So on one week of tv you can have 'real housewives' multiple time just set in different places. Internationally, we can be watching America's idol and when that finishes we get Australia's version, then NZ version and so on until you want to puke. Are they running out of ideas for good dramas. Lord, I'd rather watch numerous repeats of a good drama/comedy than some of this rubbish.

How about "Cowboy Casinos", where players stiffed by the likes of Palace of Fat Chance get to expose all Virtual Groups wrongdoings on prime time telly, and a group of seasoned "experts" tries their best to extract the royal penis from their ass, and get them their money.

Rumour has it that Channel 4 have already been sniffing around a few fruit machine forums looking for a "fruitie pro" interested in taking part in a documentary. This idea may have died, but the increase in online gambling might have them interested again.

Perhaps more interesting would be "Cowboy Casinos", which would not focus on the dark arts of the advantage player, but on the dark arts of the rogue casino. Publicity of a case involving a particular rogue casino would serve to inform many UK players who to avoid, and why. Exposing the dirty tricks used to snare the unwitting victim should also make it harder for the other rogues.

Advantage play could come into it, where unlike "Cowboy Builders" where the victim gets the botched job fixed up, "Cowboy Casinos" would have an advantage player show them how to win back the money they had nicked off them by the rogue casino by winning it from outsmarting a similar dodgy outfit.

That is just pure over kill..

I'm glad I have better things to do than waste valuable time on such garbage (well the majority).
I can't stand the cooking shows at all. I have watched Gorgon Ramsay purely for the theatrics..

I do like the educational ones, where you might learn a new skill or improve on ones you have.. Find my Ancestors, Antiques Roadshow, Aust's Most Wanted, Sensing Murder and the Psychic contestant challenges. Also ones such as the home improvement shows and property auction ones.

We have one on at the moment called the Block, where pairs of contestants vie for a spot in the chosen 4 couples to renovate a dump from start to finish with a set amount of money each. Collecting monetry rewards along the way from side challenges for the chance to win extra to spend on their dwelling. I think it takes about 12 weeks to complete and is judged each room finish by 3 masters in their fields, ie: realestate agent, interior designer and a beautiful homes magazine rep.. I love to see what people are capable of..and it's a bit amusing with squabbles between contestants and partners for a bit of extra entertainment..

This was the first year for The Voice in Australia so had to have a look. I don't watch the others, Idol or so and so's Got Talent. And didn't particulally like the Voice's format.
I guess these shows obviously appeal to many hence why there's so many. Most don't last too long.
