Are Casino Originals the Next Big Retention Tool for Online Casinos?

Over the past decade, the online casino industry has experienced massive growth, with hundreds of platforms competing for the same global player base. While operators continue to integrate games from well-known providers, many platforms now offer similar game libraries. This raises an interesting question within the industry: can original casino games help improve player retention and create stronger brand identity for operators?

Traditionally, online casinos have relied heavily on third-party game studios to supply slot machines, table games, and live casino experiences. While this model has worked well, it has also created a situation where many casinos offer nearly identical game selections. From a player’s perspective, the experience across different platforms can sometimes feel very similar.

In response to this challenge, some operators and platform providers have started exploring the concept of casino originals—games designed specifically for a particular platform or ecosystem. These games are often simpler in design compared to traditional slots but focus heavily on fast gameplay, intuitive mechanics, and mobile accessibility.

Titles such as Mines, Wheel-style games, and modern variations of dice or Sic Bo have become increasingly visible in many online gaming platforms. These types of games tend to emphasize quick sessions, straightforward rules, and immediate results, which can appeal to players who prefer short and engaging gameplay rather than long slot sessions.

Another factor influencing this trend is the shift toward mobile-first gaming behavior. Many players now access online casinos primarily through smartphones. Games with clean interfaces, quick loading times, and simplified mechanics often perform well in this environment. Because original games are typically developed with these behaviors in mind, they may offer an experience that aligns more closely with modern player habits.

From an operational perspective, original games may also allow operators to experiment with unique gameplay mechanics, reward structures, and branding opportunities. Instead of relying entirely on external content providers, platforms can potentially create experiences that feel more tailored to their audience.

Of course, it remains an open discussion whether these games truly improve long-term retention or if they simply complement existing game libraries. Some players still strongly prefer traditional slot titles from established studios, while others appear to enjoy the faster and more interactive nature of original games.

As more online casinos experiment with their own game concepts, it will be interesting to see how this trend develops. Do casino originals represent a meaningful shift in player engagement strategies, or are they simply an additional layer of variety within the broader iGaming ecosystem?

From a player’s point of view, originals are interesting mainly because they’re fast. Games like Mines, Dice, or Wheel feel more like quick sessions rather than long slot gameplay.

I’m a player and original games have zero influence on me as a retention tool, it’s all about hassle free getting paid when I withdraw, having a large selection of games, loyalty rewards, good CS etc absolutely nothing to do with casino originals for me and would expect that’s the case for most regular players.

Write that yourself did you?

100% AI in this case (proven) :-)

Well, since I already commented, I'll add a few lines.

Originals are indeed popular within some crypto brands. What distinguishes them (apart from fast gameplay) is that in most cases the tRTP is significantly higher than slots. Often in the 99% range. That is a huge difference in the long run.

Secondly, in many cases they are provably fair (client/server seed, with the option for the player to reset/change the client one). For some players this gives extra assurance and trust.

And thirdly, there are no usual costs to the casino - paying GGR % to game providers or aggregators. Apart from the initial dev costs/integration (which is usually much easier and cheaper than modern slots). Hence, the higher tRTP makes business-wise sense.

In summary, yes, they can add extra value and retention - but not as a stand-alone product, rather as an addition to the game library. For many traditional slot players they will never replace classic providers. And they attract a specific audience and are certainly gaining popularity in recent trends.

Recently I played a game called Gangsta Fruitfellas which is an Casino Originals version of Fruitfellas and this paid way better than the official one by gamebeat. More free spins, more base game hits and better bonus wins.
Over the years I have played many "casino originals" and they tend to pay better than the real ones.
