Evening all,

Just wondering if anyone else is getting pissed off with the current price of diesel and unleaded. Filled up my car today (1.5 litre diesel family SUV) at Tesco and it cost me £104.35 for 56 litres. We (household) are in a fortunate situation in that we have two incomes and the expense is not really a major issue for us, but some people we know are seriously starting to struggle now that diesel is averging around £1.85 in our local area.

I think the worst part is that there seams to be no end is sight for the increases to slow down

Agreed. Our household income is more than enough not to worry costs relating to fuel etc. I have a 1.5L petrol, she has a fully electric. Roughly £7 a week to charge it at minute.

I do feel for those on lower incomes as everytime I drive past the pump it's gone up again.

I was listening to the radio this afternoon after filling up and some economist stated that if the strait is not open within the next couple of months, then prices could realistically hit £2.80-£3 a litre

Prices were roughly the same in Australia. Immense pressure on the Government over the past 2 weeks led them to halve the petroleum excise tax (was an additional $0.56 a litre). For us, diesel now sits at roughly $3.10 a litre (slightly less than for you). Personally, the hardest part to stomach is that the Government earns extra GST (or VAT for you) when the prices go up. Considering you pay 20% vs. our 10%, it rounds out to around 37p per litre in tax.

One of the parties that can actually do something about it and are gaining massively is the Government with the additional VAT going into their coffers. They can - if they want to - temporarily reduce the VAT on fuel to still have the same amount coming in per litre in VAT/duty without it affecting their income.

£1.88 per litre here for diesel atm.

Put £46 in mine on top of 1/4 tank till pump clicked off

I only have 1.4 Fiesta so that will last 2+ weeks even using the car for work which I do daily.

Still pissed tho as although I can cover it comfortably for now, it is an extra expense I could also do with avoiding.

No facts but I do feel strongly this current fuel stock pile has been in the country for weeks and already paid for by the dealers and they're just using the current situation partially as an excuse to take the piss out of drivers (nothing new there!)

Their reasoning is that they need to buy at the higher price for the fuel that is going to arrive in the future. So whilst today's fuel may have been purchased cheaper, the next lot coming in will be dearer.

Shame the reverse doesn't happen though because it takes ages for the price to go down.

No difference to interest rates on savings accounts. BOE drops interest rates, savings interest goes down within days. BOE raises interest rates, and it takes forever for savings interest rates to go up, if ever
