Video games and gambling go so tightly together, they’re almost like a glove to a hand. But that’s yesterday’s news.
What’s new is that 13% of Norwegian adolescents aged 12 to 17 already show obvious signs of problem gambling, while 2% meet the criteria for gambling addiction. At least that’s what the most recent study conducted by Spillforsk at the University of Bergen points to.
You’d probably be puzzled over how they’d manage to develop these concerning habits at such a young age. Well, it turns out that the main gateways to problem gaming are seemingly innocent video game activities — purchasing loot boxes and skins.
The final outcome? The more involved a person was in computer games, the greater the likelihood of participating in gambling. And that’s especially true for girls.
So what’s next? Well, let’s hope these numbers push the Norwegian authorities towards real action instead of just talking about these points over and over again in conference rooms.
