Austria Finally Doing Something About Their Gambling Reform
By Natasa Milojevic, Last updated Nov 24, 2025
Everyone who’s been following what’s going on in the industry for more than a minute already knows how tight the iGaming market in Austria is. It’s basically a state-run monopoly, and only the lucky few operators have been “blessed” with a license issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
They can either stick to a handful of Austrian online casinos or have a crack at other places that operate under other EU licenses (but this would mean the Austrian authorities wouldn’t protect them if things go south).
That’s why the Austrian authorities are about to introduce some changes. Based on what’s been said online, they’re preparing a draft law of the gambling reform as we speak, and in theory, this should create an opening for more operators to lay hold of the Austrian gambling license finally.
They’re also considering entirely blocking payments and even access to unlicensed online casinos, but we all know that’s a heavy lift, and it takes a serious technical infrastructure to come to light.
The authorities claim they’ll introduce this draft law in the coming weeks, and we’re all ears on how all this will ultimately unravel.
