Canadian Senators Want to See Sports Betting Ads Gone

Ever since sports betting was legalized in Canada in 2021, it has really blasted off. It was almost as if the whole world and their dog had placed a bet at least once in their lifetime. But as with everything that soars that high, at some point, nobody’s surprised to see it crash.
With sports betting, this happened simultaneously with mobile gaming gaining its highest traction. Since nothing was stopping players from placing a bet right from their pockets, younger Canadians were particularly at risk.
That’s where Canadian senators with a plea to ban sports betting advertising come in.
In a letter to the Canadian prime minister written and dispatched by two senators (and supported by 40 more), the representatives call for a federal ban on any sports betting advertising in Canada. They also reference a staggering CBC Marketplace report finding, which reveals that sports fans spend up to 20% of every game watching gambling advertising. The potential outcome? Sports betting so normalized that Canadian youth start equating sports with gambling.
The legislative work, which is supposed to build a framework for sports betting advertising, is ongoing as we speak. We just need to glue our eyes on Canada and see what comes out of all that.
