Harsh Regulations Pushing German Players Into the Black Market

Back in 2021 when the Interstate Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV) was introduced, regulators held it as a step towards a safer gambling environment. Yet, not everyone felt the same, and it probably won’t take you long to guess who took it to heart the most. Yep, it was German players.
But they didn’t sit sulking for too long. An alarming number of players simply moved off to black market platforms, with some sources estimating that a whopping 1 in 4 German players now gamble in illegal casinos.
It’s hard to say that nobody saw this coming. Germany is the only European country that didn’t go for better AML protocols, but took the hard mechanical game-limits route. In such a restrictive environment, even gambling buffs would have predicted that German players would put their safety on the line by scuffling to offshore casinos instead of government-licensed operators.
Let’s just hope this is a wake-up call for German regulators to find a more balanced approach before everything goes sideways.
