MGA Trying to Nudge Casinos Into Being More Transparent, and It’s Not Playing Around

By Natasa Milojevic, Last updated Apr 9, 2025

We’re only 3 months into the new year, and we’re already seeing regulators throwing a wrench into the works of shady casinos. (As they should, if you asked us.)

This time, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) is siding with players big time by proposing changes to the Gaming Authorisations and Compliance Directive and asking relevant stakeholders to put in their own two cents on this whole initiative.

In layman’s terms, the MGA won’t put up with their licensees flying away with players’ money after going bankrupt. No more mixing player deposits with business expenses, either. Everything will need to be as clear as a frozen lake if the MGA-licensed casinos don’t want to see their licenses scrapped or pay hefty fines.

If the proposed amendments get the green light, the licensees will have to report player funds monthly, follow strict financial reporting rules, and let the MGA know of the first signs of any financial struggles. Didn’t we tell you the MGA is not playing around?

At this point, though, no one really knows when the amendments will be rolled out. But what’s for sure is that the MGA is not taking this lightly, so rip-off casinos have more than one reason to shake in their boots. And rightfully so.
