New Jersey Just Outlawed Sweepstakes Casinos

When Montana decided to ban sweepstakes casinos back in May, everyone who’s been in the industry for more than a day figured it was only a matter of time before another US state did the same thing. If you’re one of those people, congrats, you were right — the state of New Jersey just made any kind of sweepstakes wagering illegal.
The sweepstakes fans located in New Jersey, though, won’t be thrilled with the Bill A5447 that Governor Phil Murphy has just signed into law. Essentially, all sweepstakes-based gaming operators in New Jersey are considered to be operating illegally as of now and could be fined anywhere between $100,000-$250,000.
In other words, everything that mimics real gambling and offers any type of digital currency that can be bought with real money and/or exchanged for cash is off the table in New Jersey.
What’s next? Well, with this state down and 46 to go, any of them could be next.
