Tennessee Attorney General Went After Sweepstakes Casinos

Almost until yesterday, sweepstakes casinos were allowed to operate with no pushback in Tennessee. They weren’t officially allowed, but as long as they didn’t require players to put down any real money, they were in the clear.
So, it’s a gray area kind of thing.
But all that changed recently when the Tennessee Attorney General, Jonathan Skrmetti, decided to shut the door on a bunch of Tennessee sweepstakes, claiming that the “dual-currency system serves as a façade to hide the fact that participants may engage in real-money gambling on these platforms.”
And, given that gambling in Tennessee is strictly prohibited on any platform that’s not licensed under the Tennessee law (which none of the sweepstakes casinos ever is, since they don’t hold official licenses), you can already assume where this is going. No sweepstakes casino dealing with real money will get a seat at the table in Tennessee in the foreseeable future.
Social casinos (platforms that only let you play for fun), though, are still not treated as gambling, and that’s not expected to change any time soon.
