UKGC Introduces Controversial Online Gambling Ban for Pensioners Over 65

By Dave Sawyer, Last updated Nov 7, 2025

In a surprising move, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has announced that starting May 1st, pensioners aged 65 and over will be banned from participating in online gambling activities.

The new regulation, which has been met with mixed reactions, stipulates that this demographic will only be allowed to gamble in physical betting shops.

The UKGC claims that this decision was made to protect elderly individuals from the potential risks associated with online gambling, such as addiction and financial exploitation.

A spokesperson for the commission stated: “We have a responsibility to safeguard vulnerable members of society, and this ban will ensure that pensioners are not exposed to the dangers of online gambling from the comfort of their own homes.”

Critics of the ban argue that it is an infringement on personal freedom and that it unfairly targets a specific age group.

Many pensioners have expressed their disappointment, claiming that online gambling is a form of entertainment and a way to socialise with others in their age group.

“I’ve been playing online bingo for years,” said 72-year-old Margaret Thompson.

“It’s not just about the money; it’s about the sense of community and the friendships I’ve made. Now, I’ll have to travel to the nearest betting shop, which is quite inconvenient at my age.”

The UKGC has stated that it will work closely with betting shops to ensure that they are prepared for the potential influx of elderly customers.

Some shops are already planning to introduce special “pensioner-friendly” features, such as larger print on betting slips and complimentary tea and biscuits.

As the May 1st deadline approaches, it remains to be seen how this controversial ban will be enforced and what impact it will have on the UK’s gambling industry and the lives of pensioners who enjoy online gambling as a pastime.

Commenting on this latest and shocking ageist news, Bryan Bailey, director of Casinomeister stated: “I know a lot of us are still stuck in the 20th century, but we invented the Internet and we should have the right to blow our kid’s inheritance on the slots. Now what are we supposed to do?”
