Videoslots Fined £650,000 by the UK Gambling Commission

Videoslots Ltd. (the operator behind Videoslots, Mr Vegas, and Mega Riches) found itself between a rock and a hard place after the UKGC (the UK Gambling Commission) found that the operator lacked effective AML controls and had poorly implemented responsible gaming systems.
But it’s not like they didn’t have any kind of system in place. They did, and it was, in fact, an automated monitoring system that would automatically set a monthly deposit limit. Still, it wasn’t without a catch. The way this system was set up didn’t include players’ initial deposits. This would mean that despite you having a £3,000 monthly deposit limit in place, you could lose as much as £5,000 with no alarms being triggered whatsoever. And, you guessed it, that’s exactly what happened to one player.
On top of that, they also had a player deposit £75,000 using prepaid digital vouchers and transferring their winnings to four different bank accounts. Every gambling place that’s careful about how it does business would flag this as an issue and trigger at least a source-of-funds check. But this didn’t happen at Videoslots. So now, they have to pay their dues. £650,000 of dues and independent third-party audits, to be precise.
While the Videoslots case is no surprise (we read about similar things happening to loads of operators day in and day out), what’s really sticking out here is that the oversight occurred because the operator relied heavily on automation rather than human insight.
Does this mean no machine can ever (or at least still) beat the good old human touch? There’s some food for thought.
