Progressive Jackpots: The Math and Psychology That Keep You Hooked

By Natasa Milojevic

If you have a soft spot for progressives, you could be one of those people who’d immediately claim they know how to play progressive jackpots.

But do you, really, know your game if you’re unaware of all the mental traps and the mechanisms built to pull you in?

That’s where we come in, to unpack all the hidden biases and the mechanics behind progressive jackpot slot machines, so you can stay on top of your game without compromising responsible play.

What Is a Progressive Jackpot?

A progressive jackpot (or a progressive jackpot slot) is a slot-type casino game where the prize keeps growing with every bet until someone wins. When one player hits the jackpot, the prize resets and starts all over again.

So, with progressive jackpots, you spin the reels just like you’d usually do, but instead of a maximum payout that’s tied to how much you bet, you get the chance to win whatever’s in the bank — and that sometimes amounts to millions.

Yet, not all progressive jackpot slots are created equal, and knowing the difference can actually impact how much you can (potentially) win.

Standalone Progressive Jackpots

Standalone progressive jackpots are tied to one specific game or one slot machine. The prize pool still grows, but much more slowly than you’d expect it. That’s because the final jackpot depends on how many bets players make on that one game at that particular casino.

What this means for you is that you shouldn’t expect the final prize to be anything crazy. It’s usually just a few thousand dollars, at most.

You’ll mostly find standalone progressive jackpots at land-based casinos, though. But some online casinos offer their own versions, usually labeled as ‘Daily Jackpots’.

Local Progressive Jackpots

Local progressive jackpots are games that are linked across several slot machines (typically five) but within one same casino

In plain terms, this means that the local jackpot works just like the standalone one, but you get a chance to win more because bets from several slot machines add money to one big pot.

Network Progressive Jackpots

Network progressive jackpots are connected across many casinos, and sometimes even several casino slots at once.

This means that a portion of your bet (no matter which online casino you’re at) will go into one really gigantic jackpot fund. In turn, the potential jackpot rises very quickly and sometimes reaches mind-blowing sums.

Think Mega Moolah or the Age of Gods, since they’ve cemented their positions as all-time-favorite progressive jackpots. But not for the lack of reasons, though. Whichever online casino you pick that features any of these two network progressive jackpots, your bet will count towards the global through-the-roof jackpot.

The Math Behind the Progressive Jackpots

So what’s behind these flashy machines that lure us all in with the promise of a ditch-your-job kind of money?

On one end, there’s really complex math.

But contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be a math whizz to see through the mechanics — because we’ve stripped it all down to the non-technical basics.

Probability

Probability in progressive slot games is a fixed number that tells you exactly how likely you are to hit the jackpot on a single spin. It can be shown as a fraction, percentage, or just ‘odds.’

But why stop there, let’s break the probability concept down even further.

Each progressive slot game comes with some kind of symbols. These symbols can land in lots of different ways, but only one of those combinations will trigger the jackpot.

Term Explained

If we’re talking about a 5-reel slot with 20 symbols per reel, there could be millions of possible combinations. It’s simple math — 20 x 20 x 20 x 20 x 20 = 3,200,000 combinations.

This means that your chance of hitting that progressive jackpot will be 1 in 3.2 million. Seems slim, right?

RTP

RTP (Return To Player) is the percentage of wagered money a slot machine gives back to players over some time

But that’s the definition. Here’s what this means for all us regular folks.

Term Explained

If a slot has a 96% RTP, that means that for every $100 wagered, the game is supposed to return $96 in winnings while the casino keeps $4.

With progressive jackpot slots, though, don’t expect to see super high RTPs. It’s more somewhere around 92%, but could go even lower. That’s because a little portion of everyone’s bet goes into the shared jackpot pool, a.k.a it’s put aside for the big prize.

Volatility

Volatility is all about how often the game will pay and how big you can expect your wins to be.

Term Explained

The lower the volatility, the more frequent, but smaller wins. With high volatility games, you can expect really big wins, but they won’t happen as often.

By default, progressive jackpot slots are high volatility. What this means for you is that winning a progressive jackpot is really, really rare. But once it happens, it pops up a colossal prize.

Expected Value (EV)

Expected value is the average amount of money you can expect to win or lose per bet over time. When it’s positive, your chances of making some money are higher. With a negative EV, we’re talking about losses.

Progressive slot games have negative expected value by default. Here’s why.

Term Explained

If we’re talking about a 92% RTP progressive jackpot, your expected value per $1 bet is $0.92. Since that number’s lower than what you put down per bet, you’re losing 8 cents per 1 spin in the long run.

Payout Frequency

Payout frequency tells you how often a casino game will pay you back. The higher the payout frequency, the more often you win, and vice versa. That’s how things usually go with your typical slot.

Progressives, though, are cut from a slightly different cloth. Their payout frequency is simultaneously high and low.

Here’s the catch.

Term Explained

Most progressive jackpot slot machines will dish out frequent but low-value wins to keep players going. Think $2 to $10. So high payout frequency for smaller wins.

Major wins, though, are as rare as hen’s teeth. Meaning, low payout frequency for the pinnacle prize.

The Psychological Pull of Progressive Jackpots

In the world of progressive jackpots, complex math may hold the steering wheel, but several psychological factors are the ones shifting the gears.

Let’s unpack all the things that happen in your brain while you’re chasing that jackpot.

Gambler’s Fallacy

Once you get stuck pressing that spin button for the twentieth time and nothing happens, you may get a hunch that the jackpot just has to land anytime now. That’s gambler’s fallacy right there — a not-so-rational belief that things that have repeatedly happened in the past aren’t so likely to happen again

So, if you’re caught in a long dry spell, it’s only logical that you’re almost owed a win? Well, not exactly. At least not if you’re playing a reputable, legit, progressive jackpot slot machine.

Top-tier software providers wouldn’t be caught dead messing with the fairness of their games. That means that every spin has to be determined by the RNG (Random Number Generator), and the RNG doesn’t ‘remember’ your streaks. Think of it like a web browser that deletes your history as soon as you move on to the next website.

Confirmation Bias

We, humans, tend to look for confirmation of things we already believe to be true and completely ignore anything that might prove us wrong. And, yep, that also applies to progressive jackpots.

Let’s imagine you’ve seen two jackpot symbols while playing. Your brain immediately goes ‘Oh, that was a near miss. I must be getting closer.’ It’ll instantly forget the 30 spins you’ve previously lost, and keep on chasing that jackpot.

That’s confirmation bias working against you, and you can think about it like some kind of selective memory

Confirmation bias is also rampaging behind the scenes (in your subconscious mind) while you’re looking at that jackpot meter going higher. You’re immediately thinking it’s long overdue, and it must hit really soon.

Emotional Rollercoaster

Progressive jackpots (and all types of casino games for that matter) will give you a dopamine kick — they’re supposed to do that by design.

But what happens when you’re all pumped up with the brain’s reward chemical, a.k.a. dopamine? Well, the dopamine takes the wheel and becomes the one in charge of all your value-based decisions (the ones about rewards, costs, and risks). So, the rewards feel bigger, costs seem smaller, and you tend to downplay all the risks.

The final outcome? You keep playing long past the moment you were supposed to walk away.

Sensory Cues

Dopamine isn’t the only one in charge of your decision-making while playing progressive slot machines. The full layout of progressive jackpots adds to the challenge, too.

The glowing symbols, neon colors, flashing numbers, celebratory jingles, exploding animations — these are all there to speed up your decision making process and keep you hooked.

Have you ever noticed how slot machines sometimes blare a victory chime even though you’ve actually lost? Looks completely nonsensical, but it’s there to give you an illusion of winning and your brain eats that up. On a really subconscious level, you won’t see it as a loss just because the sound is out of sync with what’s really going on. So, you’ll still be spinning.

Can You Work Around And Still Win Progressive Jackpots?

With all that going on in the background, how do you even play progressive jackpot? Is there anything that’s really in your control? Does it even make sense to think of a strategy for winning progressive jackpots?

Let’s sort all that out.

Choose Your Game Wisely

Now you know how likely you are to fall into the trap of confirmation bias and believe that just because a person from Birmingham landed a life-changing jackpot on Mega Moolah you’ll hit it too. So, choose your progressive slot machine wisely.

Look for the higher RTP progressive jackpot slots, and aim for the ones with lower volatility and higher payout frequencies

Bet Smart and Set Limits

The machine never owes you a win, that’s just gambler’s fallacy talking. To counteract this pesky little bias, decide your budget before even reaching for your phone or opening up your web browser.

If that sounds easier said than done, think about manually setting your deposit limits. Most reputable casinos include that feature (plus some other tools to support responsible gambling), and getting it to work shouldn’t take more than a couple of quick clicks.

Avoid Playing When Stressed

If you’ve been paying close attention to the subheadings above, you’ve already seen how the shiny world of progressive jackpots clouds your judgement.

But that’s not the end of it. Even the outside world can impact your gambling decisions. If you fire up a slot machine while you’re stressed, you’re instantly more prone to risky gambling behavior. Think chasing losses, betting more than you can afford, and/or completely losing track of time.

Instead, try to delay your decision to play. At least for 15 minutes. That’ll give you enough cooling-off time for rational thinking to kick in.

Seek Support

When all is said and done, gambling can quickly get out of hand, despite you keeping all the biases in mind.

That’s when the smartest move is reaching out to support groups and professionals. The gambling support resources could differ based on where you’re at, but we’ll list some of the major ones, just in case:

In Short: Progressives Have No Secret Formula But Safer Gambling Does

Hopefully, you’re not wondering how to play progressive jackpot slots anymore. Not because we’ve given you the cheat code to the gameplay, but because we’ve proven that there is no such thing.

In a game of chance, strategy for winning isn’t worth much.

But what does count for a lot is level-headed and rational play. And that’s something you do have control over if you treat progressive jackpot games as nothing more than a fun side activity.

And if you catch any of the mental traps pulling you in, responsible gambling tools and external resources are the way to go.
