All horse racing suspended in the UK from tomorrow

The British Horseracing Authority has confirmed that all horseracing in Britain will be suspended with effect from tomorrow.
Last night, The Jockey Club announced that The Randox Health Grand National has been cancelled due to coronavirus.
Two race meetings are scheduled to take place behind closed doors at Wetherby and Taunton today, but as of tomorrow race meetings will cease up to the end of April. The decision will be kept under constant review.
The formal decision was taken by Board of the British Horseracing Authority this morning based on the statements made by the government yesterday and after consultation with senior industry leaders. Medical Advisers to the RCA and the BHA, who have been advising an industry group on the response to the crisis, have also been consulted.
The BHA took the decision to protect essential emergency services and the health and welfare of staff working in the racing industry. Racecourses and racing have obligations to ensure the safety of participants and provide medical cover which clearly cannot be fulfilled in these circumstances. This follows the new advice issued by government yesterday to combat the spread of the virus.
Nick Rust, the Chief Executive of the BHA, said:
“This is a national emergency the like of which most of us have never seen before. We’re a sport that is proud of its connection to rural communities and to the local businesses that support our industry. But our first duty is to the health of the public, our customers and to racing industry participants and staff so we have decided to suspend racing following the government’s latest advice.
“Racing is a family and I know we will pull together over the coming days, weeks and months and support each other. By stopping racing, we can free up medical resources, doctors and ambulances, be they private sector or NHS, to assist in the national effort to fight this virus. And we can support racing industry participants and staff as they face up to the personal challenges ahead and care for their own families.
“There will be difficult months ahead for many of us. We need to focus now on ensuring that we can continue to look after our horses as the virus affects the thousands of participants and staff who dedicate their lives to caring for animals. We need to do what we can to support businesses inside and outside racing and the many people whose livelihoods depend upon this £4 billion industry.
“We are in constant contact with government which understands the very significant consequences of this decision for jobs and businesses. We will work with them to do our best to manage the impact.
“Racing leaders will keep today’s decision under constant review and endeavour to keep all customers, participants, staff and dependent businesses informed as the situation progresses.”

still going. But so was UK until 1:50 today!
I think the next meeting is on Friday evening. I can't see it happening tbh. I'm quite happy to go without racing as long as the horses and those working in the industry are left in a position where they are able to resume once the ban is lifted.
I would hate to hear of horses being abandoned or shot due to an inability to look after them

greyhounds are still on!

I've zero interest in watching them. Many years ago I used to go to Hove for party nights and the dog racing was just a side thing. I don't agree with how the dogs are treat tbh. I had a mate that I spent a lot of time with. He and his family had a large breeding and training farm for Greyhounds. Once I learned how they are treat and discarded with I quickly turned my back on him.

we put virtual horses on ahead of greyhounds sometimes now !

You wouldn’t be able to bet on it. You wouldn’t have time there is a very small grace period for virtual between the countdown and a void for your bet
yes you could, you had about 8 seconds, so if you wrote the bet out all you had to do was scribble the numbers on the slip quickly before the off. This was a few years back and it has changed since then.

fair play. Must of been before my time!

I remember fixing an issue on Coral Virtual in Retail where the results came up on the screens about 5 seconds before the race finished visually :) that went down well with punters

not entirely sure what I’ve done to upset you !?

I am an advocate for greyhounds (greylady), hounds that are used as a disposable commodity for entertainment and go through horrendous abuse in the process - wish people would understand what they are supporting by attending greyhound racing!

my comment wasn’t supporting Greyhound Racing. Merely stating it was still running.

Such a shame I just don't get why it couldn't go on, it i betting the fund the sport anyway.

So many jobs and so many unpaid staff. This overreaction is a disgrace and someone needs to pay for this long term for the damage it does to all these industries.

I don't get that either.

Anyway - I'm not sure why the horses can't be raced anyway. Do they really need a stadium full of people to get the race going?

Every track needs an ambulance to race round the track for jockey falls and an ambulance within the stands and I think at least 4 paramedics over 5 meetings a day at least 20 staff and 10 ambulances that could be better put to use I'd say in the circumstances

Back in 1991 I moved to live and work near Lingfield in the sticks. I became mates with a regular customer. After some time I visited their farm which breeded and trained Greyhounds. They where mostly sent to Ireland to be sold back on around the UK for some reason? It was at that farm that I first took interest in how they where treat. Any that where not up to standard where simply shot and disposed of. The rest where not treat with kindness at all. After witnessing that I asked some more questions and it really didn't sit well with me.

But the trouble with the animals in sport issue is quite a complex one. Would you rather there be no animals in sport and 95% of those animals be culled because they are no longer needed or financially viable?

not at all. I have been a couple of times though with work.
My personal thoughts on it? I don’t know if I’m honest I have seen the protestors and such.

I do think jump horse racing is outdated ahead of anything else. Far too dangerous and risky.
Flat racing is just as risky. These horses are trained to the max before they race in earnest for the first time and long before their bones have developed enough to endure the impact. I wonder how many have to be put down before they ever reach a racetrack?
I know and hold my hands up. I may well be a hypocrite. But many of us are in some things in life

There are greyhound rescues all over the UK. When the tracks started closing, we all came together and the numbers we placed into rescue was astounding and the condition of them was nothing short of total neglect!

I had one hound who was hit on the head with a hammer and hung with wire but he managed to escape alive. He was eventually rescued by which time one eye was lower than the other and he had deep scarring to his neck - I adopted him, had him six weeks and I had to get him put to sleep after he ripped my mum's face open, she bent down to pick something up and he went for her. The vet thought the signals to his brain were short wired after having his skull beaten!

Greyhounds are one the gentlest and trusting breeds out there and what do we as humans do, abuse them for monetary gain, dispose of them in a despicable manner when they are no longer lucrative - I totally abhor the sport!!

My understanding is that all the BAGS tracks have pretty strict checking in place to ensure the well-being of the greyhounds, both during and after their career. Is that the case or just something that SIS etc push to justify it?
Having said that, I'm fully aware of the treatment some dogs get at the smaller tracks, and the owners should be shot for allowing it.

Racing and animal sports are steeped in obscene amounts of money and so with it comes the corrupt element.

In an ideal world I'd have no qualms about all horses, dogs etc being raised and treated equally well, I don't think that will ever happen however.

I don't draw that connection that racing is inherently bad because there's a nasty element in the industry, because in its base form, dog or horse racing is just a spectacle like any other. Bet on _____, watch ______ win, nothing wrong with that.

So whilst animal abuse is abhorrent in all its forms, it annoys me equally seeing local beer-swigging chavs shout their dogs into submission, stories of ASBO-parading residents abandoning their animals to perish in their houses, or any number of TV ad tragedies that befall every ad break. Not to mention what practices go on in 'developing' countries

There is so much overlooked or turn a blind eye to what goes on, it's shocking!

I admit there are some good trainers out there who actually care for their hounds and will wait for a rescue place to become available but there are plenty out there who don't give a damn!

It's being pretty widely reported that horse racing will resume in France on May 11. The sports minister has stated that all sporting events will be cancelled until September, but horse racing isn't classed as sport in France, it comes under agriculture

I've quite enjoyed the racing from America and now we have French racing from tomorrow. I'm quite pleased about getting introduced to American racing. Bring on racing in the UK soon :)

Shouldn't be too much longer, was talking to my brother earlier who works for an on course bookie, and he reckons it will be starting behind closed doors within a month or so, or at least thats what the current plans are.

As long as there are races in my time zone while I am off to keep me occupied then I am happy. But UK racing is my livelyhood in part,or should have been this year :(

Same for my brother, he had already gone part time as the bookie had cut the tracks he worked at, people think they make a fortune, but places like Pontefract on a wet Wednesday evening rarely covered costs let alone made anything, so they cut them down to the main meetings, & obviously hasn't worked since Cheltenham really. Obviously they don't have the casino side to fall back on either.

I got this info from bet365 today:

Horse Racing:

France has been given the green light to resume horse racing and it opened today with a wonderful card at Paris Longchamp, it continues throughout the week with a number of meetings also taking place at the weekend. Some of the highlight races are shown below:

- Saint-Léger des Trotteurs @ Caen on Wednesday

- Prix de La Force et Vanteaux @ Paris Longchamp on Thursday

- Murat Prize and Great Spring Hurdles Race @ Auteuil on Saturday

- Amadou Prize, Léon Rambaud, Jean Stern and President of the Republic @ Auteuil on Sunday – two of these are Group races and will prove very popular with UK fans.

If this means anything to you
